Jake and I have been best friends for fourteen years. In that time, I've watched him do a lot of things badly — parallel park, cook pasta, pretend he's fine when he's clearly not fine. But I've never once seen him love someone badly. That part, somehow, he got exactly right.

We met freshman year. Same dorm, same floor, same inexplicable fondness for terrible action movies at 2am. The kind of friendship that just happens — no ceremony, no deliberate choice. One day you're strangers, the next you're the person someone calls when everything goes sideways.

I've taken a lot of those calls. And for a long time, I worried Jake was the kind of person who was easier to love at a distance. Not because he was difficult — but because he held things close. His feelings, his fears, the things that actually mattered to him. He was generous with jokes. He was careful with the rest.

Then he met Emma.

I don't know exactly what she did. I'm not sure he does either. But somewhere between the second date and the morning he called me at 7am just to say "I think she might be the one" — something shifted. He started showing up differently. More honest. More open. Less interested in performing okayness and more willing to just be okay.

I've known Jake for fourteen years. I've never seen him be so unguarded with another person. And if you know Jake — really know him — you understand how significant that is.

Emma, I don't know if you realize what you've done. You didn't just fall in love with someone. You helped someone fall back in love with himself. That is not a small thing.

I want to say something to you both before I raise this glass. Marriage is not a destination. It's the choice to keep choosing each other — on the easy days and the hard ones, when you're laughing in the kitchen and when you're exhausted at 11pm and someone forgot to do the thing they were supposed to do. It's choosing the relationship over being right. Choosing the long view over the short irritation.

I've watched Jake choose Emma, over and over, in the small ways that don't make the highlight reel. That's how I know he's ready for this.

Please raise your glasses. To Jake and Emma — may your love be exactly as stubborn as you both are. May your house always smell like something good. And may you always find your way back to each other, no matter where you wander.

To Jake and Emma.
